Matthew is a 20 year member of Cary Fire Department. He started his fire service career in 1990 with Holly Springs Fire Department. Since starting his career he has deployed to the flooding in Kinston from Hurricane Floyd in 1999, served as a USAR NCTF8 Instructor, and a dive team member with Apex Fire Department.
In 2012 Matthew was diagnosed with PTSD. He has been traveling the long road of recovery and has returned to a normal life. He has entered the Biblical Counseling Program with Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary with the goal of helping others like him in the fire service.
Matthew is married to Holly and have two wonderful kids. During his dark times leading up to and his diagnosis, he came really close to losing his family. With the assistance of professional help and counseling, they are enjoying life together again.
His primary message for others is: “There is full and meaningful life after diagnosis and treatment. Seeking help is not the end of a career or life, it is only the beginning to a wonderful new life.” Matthew is excited about things that are happening in the fire service and serving on this team.
